Seras Victoria Funny Giving Thumbs Up
Hey all. Last time I did a review of a really good figure, so it is only proper to follow it up with a really bad one. Out of my collection, this figure is the worst one I own, though the others from her line are pretty shabby too. Talking without providing evidence will not get us far though. Let us take a look at Seras Victorias.
This version is a trading figure done by Yamato and is a Story Image Figure. Seras comes from the manga and anime Hellsing. Formerly a police officer, she gets wounded fatally as a hostage to a vampire. The person who attacked her, Alucard, offers to make her a vampire in compensation for blasting a hole in her chest, and since then she has been assisting him as one. She also uses huge guns as you can see in this figure.
There are two facts about me I want to make clear before going into detail. First of all, I love Seras. Her design and personality make her one of my favorite female manga/anime characters. Second of all, I love trading figures. They are fun to collect and can have a lot of detail for such small pieces of plastic. So I have no bias against either of these.
That means it should be pretty seriously when I say that this figure is awful. My standards are low and even I cannot bring myself to call this mediocre, let alone good. I own her because I got her out of a random box in Waldenbooks as one of my first ever figures. In other words, doing research would not have happened back then. But I do not discard my figures, seeing each one as precious in their own way, so she is here to stay.

Sadly, I cannot show her box as I threw it away after getting her. Back then I did not know to conserve! As typical with trading figures, the packaging was nothing magnificent, just a thin cardboard box and a plastic bag to protect her. However, the design on the outside of the box was nothing special (it just shows Alucard's figure with mystic symbols on the front) and there was no extra cardboard inside to protect fragile parts. It was mostly unremarkable.
The base is actually not bad for a trading figure. It appears to be gray stones and can kind of be 'interlocked' with the other Hellsing character bases. The base design is probably the only part I would give a thumbs up to.
The posing of her looks interesting at first glance. Seras is often depicted to be leaning back due to the weight of her gun, so that is not an issue.
Take a closer look at her right hand though. It is not even holding onto the gun! This is not due to how I positioned her, the gun has a slot to fit into her shoulder like that. I cannot get her hand to grip onto the gun's other section nearby either. The official picture on My Figure Collection (seen at the painting section) shows how she apparently is supposed to hold it, but mine will not.
This might just be me, but her head's position is also questionable. I cannot think of why she would have it slanted over her shoulder like that. Maybe to see someone standing nearby?
Also, her base makes her slant up in a funny manner; if you look at the other Hellsing figures from this set, their bases are totally flat.
The sculpting is iffy. She looks smooth, with her clothes being wrinkled in appropriate ways. But her hair seems uneven, and her arms are somewhat awkward. The part coming from her shoulder is a lot more thin than the part gripping her gun, which is strange in appearance. Her skirt is also really ridden up, more than I think necessary. This was probably for the 'lol fanservice' appeal but it looks ridiculous here.
The worst part, however, is her breasts. What on EARTH are those supposed to be? It looks like two tennis balls got glued to her chest! Do not misunderstand me, Seras does have pretty noticeable breasts (if you look at her other figures you will see what I mean), but this is just atrocious. I guess having something propped up against your shoulder causes your breasts to shift over, even the left one. *Tries it* Ow. No, no it does not.

As for the painting, I am at a bit of an issue with this. My Seras has a white/silver uniform while I have only seen pictures of her in a blue uniform. So either mine is an alternate secret color or Waldenbooks supports selling counterfeit figures that do not exist according to My Figure Collection. Gasp! I knew that store was suspicious!
Other than that oddity, her black stocking on the left looks weird due to a problem with the painting. Her eyes seem all right, but I am not fond of how her mouth looks. I highly doubt every one of the Seras figures has these issues, but it should show that quality control on the Hellsing line was pretty poor.
Hey! Seras, you can't do that, the review isn't over yet!
Yeah, as one might expect from her pose, she has a serious leaning problem. See how I had to prop her against the step? She has a position similar to that on my desk shelf, with the gun propped against a wooden divider to keep her from falling off her base. Before I did that, she would come crashing down at frequent intervals.
As far as enjoyment goes, I still have a soft spot for this Seras since she was one of my first. In fact, she WAS my first random figure (along with one other from her line, I got two random boxes). So I do enjoy her, though I doubt anyone else would. Unless you are a person who must have every Hellsing or Seras figure in existence. In that case, go nuts.
I would not recommend this figure to anyone besides said fans though, and even they should think twice. Only her base is higher then disgraceful, and that is in 'meh' territory. Be sure to not let this color your judgment about trading figures if you are new to them though. There are plenty of excellent ones. The Hellsing ones are just an example of what not to do with them.
And you know what? Despite all this, I still want the Alucard from this set. He is the only one I do not have; even poorly made sets like this need to be completed! One of these days…
